Users can set up the Echo Second Generation device as follows. Browse the app store to check if you have the latest version of the ALEXA APP. It is advisable to do this before you set it up.

Amazon Alexa App

  • First, SIGN IN to the Amazon Alexa app by downloading and installing it
  • The free app lets you manage your music, shopping lists, alarms and lots more
  • Verify if your phone or tablet is running on Fire OS 3.0 or newer, Android 5.0 or higher, iOS 9.0 or later
  • Search for ALEXA APP on the app store and then tap on it to select
  • Check if your computer has been enabled with the Wi-Fi and is on the internet
  • Thereafter, open a browser on your computer and go to
  • Note: There are several compatible browsers that you can use for the purpose such as Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer 10 or higher.
  • Go to the app store on your mobile and search for the ALEXA APP.  Thereafter, select, download, install.

Turn the device on

  • Use a power outlet on the wall to plug the included power adapter into the Amazon Echo second generation device
  • First there is a blue light ring and then an orange one
  • Alexa greets you when the light turns orange

Connecting to the Wi-Fi Network

Guided instructions are available on the app to connect the device and set it up to the Wi-Fi Network. Echo devices connect to networks that use the 802.11a / b / g / n standardsuch as the dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz / 5 GHz). The devices are not compatible to connect to ad-hoc networks

Connect Alexa to Wi-Fi

Do as follows

  • SETTINGS -> DEVICE SETTINGS -> Choose your Device
  • Then from under WI-FI NETWORK click on CHANGE
  • Thereafter, just have to follow instructions on the app
  • For this, users do not have to use the Alexa app
  • Instead, speak directly into the device and say GO TO SETTINGS
  • Still, you can select SETTINGS by swiping down from top of the device’s screen
  • Then choose NETWORK and then the name of the network that you wish to connect
  • For non-availability of NETWORK NAME go to the ADVANCED Wi-Fi options
  • Enter the PASSWORD after selecting the WI-FI Network from here
  • Otherwise, go to ADD A NETWORK or perform a RESCAN
  • Most of the time, for non-connectivity, plugging and unplugging the device and restarting it should troubleshoot it. Reset the device to its factory settings and try setting it up again if that does not work.

Connecting to an external speaker

Use a separate audio cable to connect the Amazon Echo second generation device to external speakers. The built-in Bluetooth also serves the purpose.

Echo Spot Setup

Use the Echo Spot to control smart home devices, organize shopping lists, stream music, audiobooks, and call through the phone lines and connect with other Echo devices. These Alexa-enabled devices come with a built-in camera and a screen to watch videos, and connect on video chat.

  • Turn the Spot on and plug it into a power outlet with the help of the adapter
  • The display lights up with the Amazon Logo
  • Greetings are issued by the AI voice assistant
  • Thereafter, select your language, connect to Wi-Fi and SIGN IN to Amazon
  • Once account login has been completed, set the preferred time zone
  • Choose a device name and then download the Alexa App
  • Press the MENU button on the app to customize the Echo Spot

  • The Echo Spot Drop In can be disabled when not required

  • Ensure that the device is plugged into the power appropriately
  • Check if the Alexa app is the latest version
  • Then select DEVICES and then choose the ADD icon
  • Thereafter to setup the device simply follow instructions / guidelines

Resetting the Setup Echo Devices

  • Reset unresponsive Echo Dots (Second Generation) by pressing and hold the VOLUME and MICROPHONE buttons together
  • The light ring turns orange first and then blue
  • Thereafter wait for the lights to turn off and then turn up again
  • Once again the orange color returns and the device goes into the SETUP ECHO mode
  • Then use the ALEXA APP to connect the device to a WI-FI

Talking to Alexa

  • The device requires a WAKE WORD setup to speak naturally. The preset wake word is ALEXA, which is by default.
  • On the ALEXA app to manage the WAKE WORD, first, select the DEVICES icon
  • Then choose WAKE WORD
  • Alternatively, speak into the device as CHANGE THE WAKE WORD to modify it
